Make Your Customers Talk To You
Don't you hate it when the boss tells you to make sure you keep in touch with existing customers by phone at
least every 30 days? Your tummy turns over because you can never think of what to say except "How are you?" and
then you hope they want to buy something else from you.
I can tell you from the receiving end that when I receive one of these calls, I get somewhat irritated as I have
been interrupted from what I am doing just so someone can check how I am. Yes, it's nice of them to call but I
would welcome the call more if they had something useful to tell me.
I suggest you brainstorm at your sales meetings some innovative ways to stay in touch with your
customers.
Be more creative
Here are some ideas to get your customers always wanting to take your calls.
- Call them to invite them to a networking function.
- Tell them you have seen an article you thought might interest them. Would they like
you to send it?
- This month you are running a special on a particular item you sell and you thought of them immediately
because you know they will shortly be re-ordering.
- You are holding a drinks function at the office for your favourite customers.
Would they like to attend and network with some great people?
- Send them a little thank you gift or card for their past business in between orders.
- Find out their birthday, so you can send them a card or call them at the actual
birthday.
- Tell them about a book or magazine that might be of interest to their industry role that you have seen.
These could be great present ideas for their staff and clients.
